The Oulx Franca Fair dates of 1494, following the transit in the Susa Valley of the armies of Charles VIII, directed to the conquest of the kingdom of Naples. The ranks of King Charles, who camped in Oulx, requested forage and imposed enormous sacrifices on the population, as had already happened in 1453 when the troops of Renato d’Angiò passed. To compensate the community for the damage suffered, the sovereign allowed the town of Oulx to hold a fair free from taxes every year in the last days of summer starting from September 15. Since that distant 1494, the Fair has attracted the population of the Dauphiné to Oulx from the Valle della Dora, the Pragelatese and the Brianzonese, sealing an exchange relationship between the transalpine Occitan communities. Later, in March 1529, Francis I will grant the community of Oulx to hold a weekly market on Saturday. The Franca Fair loses its importance following the fate of the progressive abandonment of agricultural and livestock activities starting from the 1950s. Since 1983, the Fair has been enriched by the Livestock Review of the Upper Susa Valley. This event is an occasion of celebration for permanent breeders and an opportunity to offer them recognition for the activity they still practice despite the problems and difficulties of farming in the mountains. The Franca Fair certainly represents the most important autumn event for the Upper Susa Valley and among its stalls, you can taste and buy excellent products of the valleys, listen to the typical songs, appreciate the regional costumes, and witness the traditional transhumance of the herds in the streets of the village.
