A lovely week at Villa Erica

We really enjoyed our summer holiday in this well-refurbished, impeccably clean apartment on the first floor of Villa Erica. It's only a few minutes walk from the centre of San Leonardo, which has a good supermarket and other food shops and restaurants. The road is a quiet country lane with breathtaking views of the mountains and easy access to footpaths for summer walks. The owners have renovated the apartment well, keeping its original characterful wood panelling (c.1950s for fans of mid-century alpine style) in the sitting room and spacious main bedroom, but bringing the kitchen and bathroom up to date. It was great to have both a bath and a shower, with an additional separate WC, and the kitchen was well equipped (stove-top cooking only, but good-quality pots and pans). The beds were comfortable, with nice linen provided, and plenty of towels. The owners had left piles of useful booklets and maps for guests, and the wifi was strong - that was a bonus for us, as we had work to do. The owners welcomed us very warmly and gave us local information to get started. They explained the history of Ladin, the ancient language that many people still speak in this area. They went out of their way to be helpful, even allowing us to keep our bikes securely on the enclosed balcony rather than leaving them outdoors. This is fabulous cycling country, and Villa Erica was a good base for our outings. This was a summer stay, but I imagine that Villa Erica would work well for skiing holidays too - the apartment must feel warm and cosy in winter. The Santa Croce ski lift is just below the house - in fact it is open in summer too, but we resisted the temptation to take it instead of walking uphill! We look forward to returning.
