The Birnlücke refuge in the province of Bozen is run by the Untergassmair family! The hut sits on an exposed ridge just below the Birnlücke border crossing, at the foot of the Dreiherrnspitze. It is said to be one of the most impressive mountain shelters in South Tyrol and represents the starting point for a vast choice of alpine excursions, such as the ascend to the Dreiherrnspize or the high mountain pathway Lausitzer leading to the Upper Tauern.

Number 1

Kindness, courtesy, and helpfulness are hallmarks of everyone in Val Aurina, but this place is truly number 1. Worth mentioning is the truly delicious strudel. I've seen other dishes prepared with even greater care.

Fantastic view

I've been to this refuge twice and will return again next week. The trail is easy, with the final steep section on a good gradient. From the refuge, the imposing "Tre Signori" peak appears (from here, you can reach the glacier after a night's rest; I haven't been yet, but I think it's fantastic). This route is for experienced, well-equipped hikers.
