War Museum
The White War on the Tonale Front – The Collection of Emilio Serra, Recovery Specialist and Guardian of Memory
The museum houses the collection of artefacts and memorabilia gathered by Emilio Serra, who spent around forty years carrying out research in the mountains of the Val di Sole – the scene of fierce fighting from June 1915 to October 1918.
The exhibition opens with a large map of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, produced in 1909 by the Ministry of Public Education in Vienna. It is written in Italian and was used in schools in Trentino, which remained part of Austrian Tyrol until 1918.
Through explanatory texts and photographs, the museum illustrates the construction of the fortresses in the Val di Sole, key military events along the Tonale front, the story of the refugees from the community of Vermiglio, and their return to a devastated village at the end of the war.
In the display cases, visitors can view weapons (rifles, bayonets, daggers, spiked clubs, hand grenades, a Schwarzlose machine gun), everyday objects (spades, pickaxes, lanterns, pipes), soldiers’ personal kit (helmets, gas masks), memorabilia, and decorations. Skis, ice crampons, snowshoes, and straw overboots used by sentries reflect the harsh conditions of daily life at high altitudes. Among the most striking items are several prosthetic limbs used by wounded soldiers.
On the central platform in the exhibition room, there is a display of various artillery shells of different calibres – Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and German.
