Merano & surroundings have a long and vibrant history in which personalities like Andreas Hofer played a significant role.
"Castrum Maiense" was the name of the fortified Roman settlement from Late Antiquity, which continues to exist in today’s Merano district of Mais. Merano itself was first mentioned in 857.
The city regained prominence during the Tyrolean Freedom fights of 1809 when Tyroleans fought for victory against the Bavarians and the French on Küchelberg above Merano. Andreas Hofer was the most prominent Tyrolean figure of that time.
Merano also has a long tradition as a spa town and is considered one of the first tourist hotspots in the Habsburg Empire. Many distinguished guests from politics and culture, including Empress Sissi and the writer Franz Kafka, vacationed here.
