In Lusérn, a small village frozen in time on the Alpe Cimbra, fire takes center stage every late February in one of the Alps’ most evocative and fascinating traditions: Burning March. This ancient pagan ritual is renewed year after year, uniting the community in a symbolic and meaningful celebration.

Deeply rooted in rural culture, the tradition marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. The great bonfire, lit on the hill known as Kraütz, symbolizes purification and rebirth. The flames consume the "bad season", while their warmth awakens Mother Earth, bringing fertility and new life. It is a simple yet powerful ritual, speaking the universal language of nature and fire.

On Saturday evening, as the sun sets behind the mountains, the community gathers in Piazza Marconi. From there, a small procession walks through the village collecting firewood, heading toward the Croce area. As the flames finally rise into the dark sky, lighting up faces and warming hearts, the whole village comes together around the fire. Stories are shared, hot tea and mulled wine are served, and the traditional pasta is enjoyed at the local fire station, in an atmosphere that is intimate, authentic, and welcoming to both locals and visitors.

Burning March is more than just an event – it’s an experience. It’s a chance to discover a hidden corner of Trentino where the ancient Cimbrian language is still spoken, where legends blend with reality, and where hospitality is heartfelt and true. It’s an invitation to slow down, reconnect with tradition, and become, even just for an evening, part of something real.
