Sagra dei Crotti

The first two weekends of September see Valchiavenna take center stage in one of the season’s most anticipated gastronomic events: the Sagra dei Crotti!

Spectacular natural theaters of the event are the Crotti themselves, natural cellars characterized by the "sorel" (dialect "sorà," to ventilate), i.e., a natural notch in the rocks from which a breeze blows, keeping the temperature almost constant in every season, between 4 and 8 degrees above zero.

Used as real "zero-cost refrigerators," thanks to the construction of a wall, the Crotti have over the centuries become guardians of the region’s gastronomic delights. With the Sagra dei Crotti these gems of Valchiavenna are highlighted through gastronomic itineraries in the streets of Chiavenna, an archetypal "slow" town. Moreover, precisely for the occasion of the Sagra dei Crotti, some private crotti are purposely opened!
